Who André Leon Talley Was, and Why This Collection Exists
André Leon Talley was born in 1948 and died on 18 January 2022 at the age of 73. He came to fashion through Brown University, where he studied French literature, and through an internship with Diana Vreeland at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. At Vogue he was fashion news director from 1983 to 1987, then the magazine’s first African American male creative director from 1988 to 1995, then editor at large from 1998 to 2013.
What made him more than a masthead name was the use he put that position to. He was close to Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld and Manolo Blahnik, and he spent decades pushing for Black designers and Black models to be on runways that were not making room for them.

The accessories are where this drop is unusually accessible for the brand. The felt cap is $58, the beanie in black is $68 and was also flagged low stock, the silk bandana is $50, the ADG monogram towel in blue is $118, and a pin pack comes in at $15. For a label whose signature denim sits near $295, a $15 entry point into a named collaboration is not something that comes around often.
